A car crashed into the new monument at Corey Ingram Circle.
The steel stopped the car from moving further.

POUGHKEEPSIE – A fundraiser in honor of fallen US Navy Petty Officer Corey Ingram, killed aboard the USS John McCain in 2017 was held on Friday night, just two days after a motorist slammed into the recently unveiled monument in his honor on the north side of Poughkeepsie.

On Wednesday night, a driver traveling toward the city jumped a curb approaching the Corey Ingram Circle roundabout, went across the traffic lane, and slammed into the steel monument in the center of the circle.  The young driver was startled but did not require medical attention, according to the Poughkeepsie firefighters who responded to the wreck.

A witness told Mid-Hudson News that the woman was “speeding down the road, hopped the first curb, continued straight across the road, jumped the curb on the circle, and plowed into  the steel,” adding “she didn’t look like she was trying to stop at all.”

The City of Poughkeepsie police were investigating the accident.

Unlike the vehicle, the steel monument, only recently unveiled, sustained only minor bends.  Ingram’s father Jerry was shown a picture of the wreck on Wednesday night and responded by asking if everyone was okay.  When told that no injuries were reported, he expressed relief.

Just two days later, a fundraiser in Corey’s name was held at Mahoney’s Steakhouse to raise money for the Corey G. Ingram Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards college assistance to seniors from Poughkeepsie High School who are attending college.  The event was well attended and Jerry Ingram noted that donations to the fund are always welcome.  The scholarship is part of the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley.  Donations can be made here.
