NEWBURGH – Independent Living, Inc. has announced the establishment of the Darcie M. Miller Excellence in Behavioral Health Leadership Award.

The recognition will honor individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and dedication in the field of behavioral health, embodying the values and characteristics exemplified by Miller throughout her career. Miller, Orange County’s commissioner of both Mental Health and Social Services, will retire this summer after a career that spanned 36 years.

The inaugural presentation of the Darcie M. Miller Excellence in Behavioral Health Leadership Award will take place on Thursday at the “Elevating Voices: Bridging Generations for Mental Wellness” conference, the 20th annual Wellness Conference hosted by Independent Living, Inc. and Rehabilitation Support Services.

“The Darcie M. Miller Excellence in Behavioral Health Leadership Award celebrates individuals who embody Commissioner Miller’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and partnership in the field of behavioral health,” said Doug Hovey, chief executive officer of Independent Living, Inc. “Darcie leaves behind a legacy of partnerships and collaboration, where every door is the right door for support. Her commitment to systems change ensures that individuals can turn to any ‘Welcome Orange’ agency for assistance at any point in their journey, embodying a transformative approach to behavioral health advocacy,”

Miller began her career in county government as a nurse’s aide in Niagara County in December in 1987. She started her tenure with Orange County government in 2001. Miller was named commissioner of Social Services in December of 2014.

She was appointed Mental Health commissioner in March of 2012 after serving as the department’s deputy for seven years. Miller is highly regarded by her colleagues in county government and her peers in the professional community.

“Through this award, we honor the legacy Darcie will leave — a legacy of compassionate and effective leadership in behavioral health and human services,” said Susan Miller, chief operating officer for Rehabilitation Support Services.
