PLEASANT VALLEY – A house fire on Smith Road just before 6 p.m. on Monday claimed the life of a family canine and caused a firefighter to sustain minor injuries.  The caller who reported the fire indicated they heard an explosion and added that the house’s basement was on fire.

Pleasant Valley fire officials were on the scene three minutes after the call and confirmed a working fire, and requested additional fire departments with apparatus and manpower to the scene.  Other fire departments were relocated to other fire departments to provide coverage in those districts.

The homeowner rescued three dogs but one perished in the fire and a pet cat was unaccounted for.

A firefighter from the Roosevelt Fire District in Hyde Park sustained minor injuries after falling through the floor while fighting the fire.  He was treated at the scene but declined additional at the hospital.

Firefighters were able to prevent the house from being destroyed by fire.
