Middletown – City of Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano presented state champion wrestler Stephan Monchery with a key to the city at the Common Council meeting on Tuesday night.

Monchery, a senior at Middletown High School, won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) wrestling championship at 285 pounds in February. He is the first Middletown wrestler to win a state wrestling championship since 1998.

“We wish you the best in your endeavors,” Mayor DeStefano told Monchery, who will go on to wrestle at Division I Buffalo University.

Monchery finished his senior year with a 42-0 record and is Middletown’s all-time career leader with 190 victories. He was also a standout starting two-way lineman for Middletown’s Section 9 football championship team last fall.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my parents for being here and for my coaches for being here,” Monchery said. “I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without their support. The support that my family, my coaches, my teammates have given me, I can’t explain how appreciative I am for that.”
