BEACON – Fire at Colonial Springs Apartments in the City of Beacon just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday caused damage to the two-story building-three. As a result of the fire, 30 residents were displaced from their homes.

The smoke billowing from the roof was first spotted by Newburgh city firefighters who saw the smoke from their firehouse across the Hudson River. They notified the Beacon Fire Department, which was on the scene within three minutes.

Newburgh City, Village of Fishkill and Castle Point departments responded under mutual aid.

Beacon Fire Chief Thomas Lucchesi said the fast-moving fire was found in the attic space above four apartments.

Firefighters, with the assistance of Beacon Police, made sure the building was evacuated and began an aggressive attack to extinguish the fire, the chief said.

When the third alarm was sounded, Glenham and Rombout fire departments responded to the scene along with Coldenham as the FAST team (Firefighter Assist Search Team).

The Red Cross provided emergency housing with assistance from the Salvation Army for the displaced families.

Dutchess County Cars 13 and 17, Beacon Medic 1, Beacon Volunteer Ambulance, and the Beacon water and building departments assisted at the scene.
