SPRING VALLEY – The Red Cross has closed the shelter established at the Louis Kurtz Civic Center after the Wednesday, February 28 fire on Union Road in Spring Valley.

While the shelter was open, 22 residents stayed there on the night of February 28 and 20 stayed on the night of February 29.

In addition, food, water, and access to Red Cross health and mental health volunteers was available to all residents displaced by this fire. More than 25 Red Cross volunteers and staff supported the relief operation.

There were 51 units in the building evacuated after the fire, either due to fire damage or the loss of utilities. As of Friday afternoon, residents of 37 apartments were able to reoccupy their homes. The Red Cross provided residents who remain displaced due to the fire emergency financial assistance, and they continue to work with Red Cross caseworkers to transition to support from government and nonprofit agencies that can assist with longer term recovery needs.
