HUDSON HIGHLANDS – State Police responded to the area of the Breakneck Ridge tunnel on Saturday evening, searching for an alleged parachute jumper in distress.  The call to 911 was received just before 6:00 PM.

A New York State trooper was dispatched to the area of the Breakneck Tunnel on the Dutchess/Putnam border after Putnam County 911 received a call from a passerby reporting a subject jumping from the mountain with a parachute.

The 842-foot tunnel carries both rail and motor vehicle traffic north and south through the Hudson Highlands.

According to emergency radio transmissions, a passerby called Putnam 911 after observing what they believed to be a person jumping from the Breakneck Mountain ridge with a parachute that was not working.  Due to the location, Putnam County 911 transferred the call to a dispatcher for the State Police Troop K in Pleasant Valley.

While the first trooper was dispatched, several other state police units were activated to respond, including the aviation unit which includes helicopters.

Officials did not respond to an inquiry regarding the search results.
