SHANDAKEN – State Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident on Route 28 in Mt. Tremper Monday morning that claimed the lives of two Kingston High School students.  The wreck occurred at approximately 8:05 a.m. and also injured a third student.

In a statement on the Kingston City School District website, Superintendent Dr. Paul Padalino said the following:

“It is with a heavy heart that we reach out to inform you of a devastating automobile accident that occurred earlier today in Mt. Tremper, resulting in the loss of two Kingston High School students with another student being hospitalized.  Our hearts ache as we process this tragic news, and our love and support go out to all those affected by this unimaginable loss.”

The district activated the Critical Incident Stress Management Team which is comprised of social workers, psychologists, nurses, counselors, and safety personnel.  All of the team members are specially trained to assist students, staff, families, and others affected by traumatic events.  The team, according to KCSD, will be available all day in all district schools for the near future.

“We encourage families to talk openly with their children about their feelings and reassure them that it’s okay to seek help if needed. Additionally, please be mindful of any signs of distress or changes in behavior that your child may exhibit and reach out to our school counselors or administration for assistance,” Padalino said.

Individuals who want to meet with team members can contact Kingston High School Principal Dr. Rachael Scorca at 845-593-3701.

The police and school district have declined to release the identities of the students who perished in the wreck that forced the closure of the intersection of Routes 28 and 212 while the accident was investigated.
