TOWN OF WALLKILL – What appears to have been “some sort of issue” between two boys at Monhagen Middle School in the Town of Wallkill resulted in one of the boys stabbing the other Wednesday morning. A second student was injured, according to Superintendent of Schools Amy Creeden.

The school was immediately locked down and the suspect was taken into custody. He will be charged with juvenile delinquency and adjudicated by the Orange County Attorney’s Office.

Both the wounded victim and suspect are 13-years-old.

Wallkill Police Chief Robert Hertman said the injured youth was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center and then transferred to Westchester Medical Center with multiple stab wounds to the chest. He is in stable condition, the chief said.

When the word went out of a stabbing at the school, a large police presence was established, but the chief said the situation was defused immediately with the alleged attacker arrested.

No weapons were recovered, said Creeden.

After-school activities at the school were cancelled and students were sent home about two hours after the 7:40 a.m. incident, which officials said was confined to one area of the school.
