ESOPUS- More than 150 middle and high school students from Ulster, Greene, Orange, and Westchester Counties will compete at the Mount Academy in the 2023-2024 VEX Robotics Competition game, Over Underpresented by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation.  The action-packed event will feature more than 30 teams who will collaborate with other teams in back-to-back challenges with robots they designed, built, and programmed using VEX V5 components and software.

This is one in a series of VEX competitions, representing the world’s largest and fastest-growing competitive robotics programs for elementary, middle, and high schools, and colleges.  More than 23,000 teams from 58 countries participate in over 2,300 events worldwide.  The season culminates each spring with the VEX Robotics World Championship.  These competitions serve as vehicles for students to develop critical life skills such as teamwork, ingenuity, and project management through building robots and collaborating with fellow students from the community.

“Seeing these students take ideas and turn them into working robots, from start to competition, is truly amazing.  The chance to go head-to-head with their peers, learning from each other along the way, is just plain inspiring.  These events are a hands-on workshop, shaping these students with the practical skills they’ll need to tackle real-world challenges and be the innovators of the future,” said Eddie Maendel, Mount Robotics co-coach.  Clifford Liu, Mount Robotics co-coach and math teacher added, “the Vex competition requires a high level of inter-student and inter-team collaboration as all matches are battled between 2-team alliances, which are randomly chosen during the qualifier rounds.  This requires students to hone and use all of their interpersonal communication skills:  it’s great to see my math students enjoying learning outside of the classroom!”
