WASHINGTON – Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R, CA)  has announced he will retire from Congress at the end of the year.

His decision comes two months after members ousted him from the leadership post.

Senator Kirstin Gillibrand (D, NY), meanwhile, was critical of the former leader of the other house.

“I think he has been a pretty ineffective leader in the House so I don’t think it’s a great loss,” she said.

McCarthy was replaced by fellow Republican Mike Johnson who brought the issue to remove Congressman George Santos to the floor for a vote.
