ELLENVILLE – Retired Ellenville Police Chief George Sheeley has died, current chief, Philip Mattracion said on Wednesday.

He was the husband to Mary Sheeley, a former Ulster County legislator and former Ellenville village manager.

Chief Sheeley began his career with the Ellenville Police Department in May 1961, working his way through the ranks before being named chief in 1974. He held the top job until his retirement in March 1992.

Mattracion worked under Sheeley for six years before he retired.
