TARRYTOWN – A 53-year-old Clifton Park man was killed early Friday when the tractor-trailer he was driving struck a guardrail and storage outbuilding on the northbound Thruway in Tarrytown and burst into flames.

When State Police arrived on the scene, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

A preliminary investigation determined the driver and sole occupant, Richard Simmons, left the road just before the Governor Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge and struck the guiderail and building.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Thruway Authority, Tarrytown, Nyack and Central Nyack fire departments, as well as Tarrytown Volunteer EMS and Greenburgh EMS.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
