GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature, Thursday, called on FEMA to rethink its denial of individual aid for those residents whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed when floods ripped through areas of Orange County.

The Highland Falls, West Point, Cornwall area took a big hit when heavy rains struck, washing out homes, wiped out roads and bridges and carried vehicles away.

County Legislator Laurie Tautel said local elected officials did what they could when the floodwaters struck.

“It is now time for the federal government to step forward and support our community with the tax dollars we pay to them,” she said. “It’s disgusting, absolutely appalling that they would deny us the individual assistance with the amount of disaster and the amount of people whose lives were permanently affected by this flood, including the loss of a very dear resident of our community.”

Legislator Jimmy O’Donnell proposed that the county set aside funds to assist those who have suffered devastating impacts of the storm.
