GOSHEN – The former treasurer of the Monroe Lakeside Fire and Rescue Company has been sentenced to state prison on his guilty plea to grand larceny for stealing over $421,000.

He stole the funds from the fire company over a more than 18-month period.

District Attorney David Hoovler said Ian Harriton, 29, of Monroe, received a stiff prison sentence.

“Because of the breach trust, we had recommended four to 12 years and he was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for the theft,” he said.

Harriton must also pay full restitution.

Hoovler said volunteer firefighters are “some of the bravest people in our communities, routinely choosing to put themselves in harm’s way in an effort to help their fellow citizens.”

The DA said Harriton’s actions “violated the trust of not only his fellow firefighters, but the community as a whole.”
