WASHINGTON D.C.- President Biden has authorized a Major Disaster Declaration for Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, and Rockland counties following flooding from heavy rainstorms that caused extensive damage earlier in the month.  This declaration comes after calls for such a declaration from Governor Kathy Hochul, U.S. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Congressmen Pat Ryan and Mike Lawler.

The move prompts the federal government to provide assistance to communities impacted by flooding and releases critical federal assistance to support recovery and reconstruction efforts. Designated counties now have access to financial support for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs to public buildings and infrastructure.

“After devastating floods caused extreme damage across Upstate New York this month, I’m thankful President Biden has approved my request for a Major Disaster Declaration,” Governor Hochul said.  “My administration will work directly with FEMA in the coming weeks to ensure our local government partners receive the critical funding they need to begin the recovery and rebuilding process.”

“The last few weeks have been devastating and heartbreaking for our community, especially for families in Highland Falls, Fort Montgomery, and Cornwall,” said Congressman Pat Ryan (D-NY18).

Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY17) thanked President Biden for the declaration but was displeased that Westchester County was not made eligible for federal assistance.  He pledged to continue working toward Westchester’s inclusion in the declaration to ensure that Hudson Valley residents receive every bit of federal assistance they are due.
