MID-HUDSON- Sunday’s heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for locations in the Mid-Hudson region as streams and rivers filled to capacity.

First responders throughout the area were dispatched to assist with localized flooding and perform water rescues.  There were also several calls for assistance for motorists who had become trapped in vehicles on roadways that had become flooded.

On Sunday afternoon the state police issued a notice asking the public to avoid the Palisades Interstate Parkway due to flooding.  Areas in the Southeastern part of Orange County were hit particularly hard, with many emergency services calls in the Highland Falls/Fort Montgomery area.

The region’s utility providers also reported outages as a result of the weather and repair crews were working to restore power to impacted households.  As of late Sunday evening, Governor Kathy Hochul’s office reported an estimated 13,000 households without power.

Hochul also declared a state of emergency in Orange County and indicated that state emergency services are in close communication with local officials who together are conducting search and rescue efforts.

Monday’s weather is expected to improve, but more rain remains in the forecast.  Skies will be cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high near 78 degrees.
