Former Westbrookville Post Office

WESTBROOKVILLE – The contract post office in the hamlet of Westbrookville was shut down on Wednesday forcing those with PO boxes to drive three miles to Otisville to retrieve their mail.

There may be hope though, as Mamakating Town Supervisor Michael Robbins told a town board meeting Thursday evening that another individual may be applying to reopen the facility.

All day Thursday, Westbrookville residents who had PO boxes at the tiny, now shuttered storefront, showed up, only to find their mail had been moved.

One resident was “blindsided” by the development.

“This was less than 24 hours, so nobody knew this was coming,” said one woman standing outside the building. “There are only 600 people that live in this community and a lot of them are senior citizens. It’s not okay.” One man told the town board what was on his mind. “As taxpayers, we should have mail home delivered.” A woman told the board, “Meds, bills, people are going to be late on a lot of things. People have lives,” she said.

The bank of PO boxes was already removed from the old post office by Thursday morning and set up in Otisville.
