TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Danskammer Energy, which wanted to construct a new gas-powered electric generating plant on the site of the existing facility, says it will not challenge the Department of Environmental Conservation’s denial of air permits for the project.
Danskammer has asked that the permit proceeding be paused for one year, a request approved by the state administrative law judge overseeing the appeal.
Eric Wood, Hudson Valley regional coordinator for New York Public Interest Research Group, said that does not mean the project is dead as they believe the company will seek to modify its plans.
“We are assuming that modification might include some type of new technology hydrogen, renewable natural gas, which by definition is really rolling out disguising the fracked gas that they are burning all together and mixing other stuff in it,” he said.
Sandra Kissam, chairwoman of RAPP – Residents Against Pilgrim Pipelines, said Danskammer’s decision “removes two threats: toxic fumes locally harming Town and City of Newburgh residents and these emissions adding to our regional pollution and furthering climate change.”
A Danskammer spokesman could not be reached for comment.
