ALBANY – Officials of the North Salem Central School District in Westchester County did not ensure network user accounts were adequately managed, an audit by the State Comptroller’s Office reported.

The examiners also found sensitive information technology control weaknesses that were communicated confidentially to officials.

The study also found district officials should have developed procedures for granting, changing and disabling network user accounts. They should have also ensured that information technology staff disabled 181 unneeded network user accounts. Seven of them left the district between 2011 and 2019.

The auditors said the district should develop procedures for granting, changing and disabling network user accounts, and ensure that employees implement and comply with the procedures, and maintain a list of authorized user accounts and routinely evaluate and disable any unneeded network user accounts.

District officials agreed with the state’s recommendations and have initiated or indicated they planned to initiate corrective action.
