HYDE PARK – At the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Council’s meeting Friday, Johny Nelson, a labor market analyst with the State Department of Labor, said the regional unemployment rate dropped to 2.9 percent in March, down from 3.3 percent 11 months earlier

“Our unemployment rates have been hovering around or at near historical lows,” he said. “2.9 percent is the lowest March rate on record, dating back to 1990.”

March’s unemployment rate of 2.9 percent is a drop from 3.3 percent in April 2022. Rockland County had the lowest March unemployment rate in the seven-county region with 2.6 percent. The April 2023 figures have not been released yet, but 11,900 jobs were added in April with gains mostly coming in education, hospitality, construction and mining.

Included in the fiscal year 2023-2024 will be a $6 million innovation matching grant program for small businesses receiving federal funds.

“Phase 1 awardees will be eligible up to $100,000; phase 2 awardees will be eligible up $200,000,” said Tom Scaglione, executive director of the Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Council.
