TOWN OF WALLKILL – The six-month moratorium on the construction of new warehouse distribution centers in the Town of Wallkill expires today (May 18); however, the town board recently voted to extend that freeze for another six months.

Town Supervisor George Serrano said they want to review a new town master plan before it is lifted. That new master plan is not yet complete.

The town board also imposed a 12-month moratorium on any development at the Shawangunk Kill for environmental reasons.

“We wan to do some studies on some endangered species along the kill,” he said. The town will issue a request for proposals for a consultant to conduct those studies.

In the long run, Serrano does not believe a full 12-month moratorium on new warehouses will hurt the town or the developers.

A number of warehouse distribution centers have been constructed in Wallkill with others on the books for future development.
