MONTICELLO – In the wake of New York City sending asylum seekers to a Liberty motel on Thursday, Sullivan County Government declared a state of emergency.

The reason, according to the declaration signed by County Manager Josh Potosek is the county’s “housing stock significantly limits its ability to provide temporary, permanent and emergency housing for the citizens of Sullivan County and the clients of Sullivan County’s local social services district.”

It said the county is not capable of receiving clients from other areas including New York City and providing housing to them.

The arrival of migrants from the City of New York “has created this state of emergency and this situation threatens the public health and the public safety.”

The emergency will remain in effect for 30 days.

Potosek directed all departments and agencies of the county “to take whatever steps necessary to protect life, health, ands property, public infrastructure, and provide such emergency assistance deemed necessary.”
