WHITE PLAINS – Holtec, the company that purchased the shuttered Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, is proposing to discharge treated radioactive water into the Hudson River and Hudson Valley counties are banding together in opposition to the plan.

Westchester Executive George Latimer is leading the local charge saying that discharge would be extremely harmful.

“This is a decision that is going to be made at the federal government level but those of us in local government want to be sure that our voices are heard along with citizen voices – those from various towns and cities that are on the river – as to how dangerous we think this could be for our communities and for the life of the river,” he said.

Holtec bought the former power plant with the intention to dismantle it over time.
