Driver arrested after stealing ambulance

TOWN OF GREENBURGH – A 47-year-old Bronx man has been arrested after he allegedly stole a Mount Sinai ambulance from St. Luke’s Morningside Hospital but was caught on the Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge.

The incident began at around 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, March 30.

The vehicle was GPS tracked by FDNY and was reported traveling north on the Thruway in the Town of Greenburgh. Several minutes later, state troopers spotted it near exit 9 in Tarrytown and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, later identified as Matthew Chacko, failed to comply and a slow-speed pursuit ensued.

State Police used a tire deflation device to disable the vehicle on the bridge and Chacko was taken into custody without further incident.

He was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, obstructing governmental administration, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
