KINGSTON – The State Comptroller’s Office and Ulster County District Attorney have launched an investigation into allegations that former County Finance Commissioner Burt Gulnick stole thousands of dollars from the Hurley Recreation Association, a private swim club for which he served as treasurer.

Gulnick resigned over the allegations.

County Executive Jen Metzger has asked Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli to conduct a forensic audit of the county’s finances to investigate whether any county resources have been compromised during Gulnick’s 12 year tenure.

She also asked the comptroller to identify any improvements that can be made to the county’s internal controls and systems.

“From my perspective, this challenging moment is an opportunity to scrutinize the county’s financial system and internal controls, modernize that system where necessary, and create the level of transparency, accountability, and security taxpayers deserve,” Metzger said.
