NEW CITY – Five local residents have been recognized for their efforts in helping three people, including two who lost consciousness mid flight and the rescue of a boy who had fallen through ice into freezing lake water.

Theodore (Naftoli) Schischa, Tzvie (Heshy) Leifer, Asher Wieder, Shloime Spira and Mark (Moshe) Schuster were recognized for their efforts during a ceremony Wednesday led by Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder.

Wieder presented a Distinguished Service Award to each volunteer, the Legislature’s highest award. He was joined by County Legislators Joel Friedman, Itamar Yeger, Toney Earl and Phil Soskin.

“The ultimate hero is not the person with the one heroic deed to his credit but the person that dedicates every day of his life to doing altruistic deeds with no particular recognition,” Wieder said, characterizing all the recipients as such.
