POUGHKEEPSIE – A jury convicted Carlton Belton, an ex-convict, on felony murder and weapons charges on Wednesday afternoon in the death of 27-year-old Atiba Proverbs after a June 2022 shootout at a Main Street convenience store.  Belton, 31, also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident at the Casablanca store at 386 Main Street.  The incident was captured on the store’s surveillance cameras.

Belton was previously convicted of violent felony charges of robbery and gun charges for robbing a man at gunpoint in Newburgh in 2013.

Dutchess County Senior Assistant District Attorney Anthony Parisi prosecuted Belton for the recent murder.  “He is a persistent violent felony offender (PVO) so he can receive between 15 and 25 years to life on both the murder and weapons possession charges when he is sentenced by Dutchess County Court Judge Jessica Segal on March 28th,” Parisi told Mid-Hudson News.  Parisi, the Violent Crimes Bureau Chief for the Dutchess County DA’s Office said he intends to ask for consecutive sentences on each count of the conviction because of his repeated violent behavior.
