ED HOOK – Quick action by two good Samaritans is credited with saving the life of a 76-year-Red Hook woman who was run over by a 90-year-old motorist as he backed out of a parking spot at the Extra Mart at 2 West Market Street in the village.

Red Hook Police said the investigation determined the woman was walking through the parking lot when a 2017 Buick, driven by the elderly Red Hook man was attempting to back out of a parking space and struck her.

She fell to the ground behind the vehicle, but police said the driver was unaware of the collision and continued to back up, causing the woman to become trapped underneath.

A quick acting witness ran to the aid of the woman and stopped the driver from continuing to back up. With the assistance of another witness, they were able to free her.

She was transported by EMS to MidHudson Regional Hospital in the Town of Poughkeepsie where she was treated for minor injuries to her shoulder and legs.

Police said no tickets were issued and the investigation is ongoing.

Red Hook Police were assisted at the scene by the Red Hook Fire Department and Northern Dutchess Paramedics.
