POUGHKEEPSIE – Forty-five-year-old fugitive Walter Shuster III was taken into custody by City of Poughkeepsie Police on Friday, January 13, after attempting to flee from police near the intersection of North White Street and Maple Street.  Police had tried to stop Shuster because of an outstanding felony warrant for burglary in the Town of Ulster.

At approximately 1:10 p.m. the City of Poughkeepsie Police attempted to perform a traffic stop on Shuster’s vehicle after being advised by the Town of Ulster Police that he was wanted on the felony warrant.  When Poughkeepsie police tried stopping him, he ignored the police lights and sirens, and drove away, striking several vehicles before his car became disabled.

Shuster was taken into custody at the accident scene by police while members of the Poughkeepsie Fire Department and Mobile Life rendered aid to the other motorists involved in the collisions.  There were no serious injuries.

In addition to the original fugitive warrant, Poughkeepsie police have charged Shuster with unlawful fleeing, reckless driving, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and numerous traffic violations.

He was processed at police headquarters and turned over to the Town of Ulster Police Department to answer the felony warrant.
