First-ever community menorah lit in Parksville

PARKSVILLE – The eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins at sundown on Sunday and across the region, large menorahs or candelabras, are lit symbolic of the celebration.

In Parksville, a community menorah was constructed and lit for the first time on Saturday evening.

It is a special candelabra as each light represents a local symbol, noted Tobi Innerfield.

“You see the ice cream cone for the ice cream shop, the one light that’s in Parksville, the turtle which is for the Native Americans and the Lenape who were in this region. So, each symbol on the menorah is symbolic of our region,” she said.

Van Morrow of Livingston Manor crafted each wooden symbol atop the candelabra, which he saw assembled for the first time on Saturday evening.
