Communicated Content – The New York Red Bulls once again had a fine Major League Soccer regular season in 2022. The team qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs after finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference standings, with 53 points. However, New York finished 14 points behind the Eastern Conference regular season winner the Philadelphia Union, who went on to finish as runner-up in the MLS Cup Final.

The MLS Cup Playoffs were a different story for the New York Red Bulls. The team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by FC Cincinnati, as the Red Bulls were beaten 2-1 in the single elimination game. The Red Bulls’ shortcomings were on display in the playoffs, and it is up to the club to now find the missing pieces to take them to a first-ever MLS Cup trophy.

The 2023 season is just weeks away and New York is now in the market to add quality throughout the squad. The team has already added a few new names before the season’s start.

Homegrown defender arrivals in New York

The Red Bulls added homegrown player Curtis Ofori to the team this off-season. Ofori is a left-back who came through Red Bulls II, the club’s reverse squad. Ofori is a promising young player and has played for the United States national team at youth levels.

Ofori joined Red Bulls II in 2021 and since joining the reserve team, has amassed 41 appearances for the team. The 17-year-old made 27 appearances for Red Bulls II in 2022. The left-back’s contract runs through 2025 and has a club option for 2026. The youngster will provide depth to the Red Bulls’ starting XI.

Red Bulls add a new No 7

The Red Bulls added a new No 7 in the offseason with the free signing of Cory Burke. The Jamaican international signed for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and the Red Bulls have a club option for a third season on the player.

Burke played for New York’s Eastern Conference rivals, the Philadelphia Union, for the last five MLS seasons. The 30-year-old appeared in 93 MLS matches, scoring 25 goals, and adding eight assists.

The Jamaican started his career with Rivoli United in his home country. Burke joined Bethlehem Steel in 2016 and joined the Union two years later. Burke has played 27 times for the Jamaica national team, scoring seven times.

What’s next for the New York Red Bulls’ roster?

The Red Bulls are currently in the market for a new designated player for the 2023 season. The DP allows teams to sign players outside of the league’s restrictive salary cap. Brazilian midfielder Luquinhas and Polish striker Patryk Klimala are New York’s current DPs.

The transfer window in MLS, South America, and Europe opens in January, giving teams the chance to buy and sell players. The Red Bulls will likely attack their roster during the January transfer window to add a high-quality player.
