BEACON – Two people were rescued from a sailboat that was taking on water in the Hudson River on Saturday night near the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.  The City of Beacon Fire Department fielded the call around 8:30 p.m. on November 26, 2022.

The Beacon Fire Department requested a marine unit from the New Hamburg Fire Department after they arrived at Long Dock Park to assess the situation.  New Hamburg reportedly had difficulty getting their boat running, causing Beacon fire officials to request a boat from the West Point Fire Department.  A helicopter was also requested but the aviation unit advised that they were unable to hoist people to safety and the chopper was canceled.

The Roosevelt Fire Department in Hyde Park offered assistance and was prepared to trailer their boat from Staatsburg to Beacon to assist with the rescue.  Roosevelt’s first responders were canceled when New Hamburg Fire District Chief Jeff Renihan reported that his department’s vessel was in the water and leaving the dock to respond to the crisis.

Chief Renihan and his crew arrived at the distressed 33-foot sailboat and rescued two passengers from the vessel and transported them to the shore for evaluation by ambulance staff.  The rescue occurred at approximately 8:54 p.m.

Beacon Fire Department officials requested the United States Coast Guard to the scene to secure the sailboat.  That request was canceled when New Hamburg Chief Renihan reported that the sailboat, still taking on water, had dropped an anchor and was not capable of being moved.  Scene commanders canceled the request Coast Guard request and asked for the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit to the scene to secure the vessel.

The sheriff’s office deferred to New Hamburg’s fire personnel, who towed to boat to safety.
