PORT JERVIS – A two-alarm fire in a multi-family apartment house in Port Jervis was quickly brought under control by responding departments late Friday morning, but sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage as it initially spread in upstairs and attic areas.
Port Jervis Police Department received a call reporting smoke coming from the building at approximately 11:45 in the morning. Heavy smoke surrounded the structure as Port Jervis Fire Department and mutual aid units arrived quickly on scene and began an aggressive interior and exterior attack along multiple sides of the building.
Port Jervis Fire Chief Keith Brown said the 16 Holbrook Street structure, located at the corner of Holbrook and West Main Streets, housed three apartments. While all residents were safely evacuated from the homes, a cat.
Neighbors in the residential West End section of the city where the house is located watched as firefighters fought the blaze. Several of the neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from a vent in a rear upstairs area of the house, as well as along front, side, and rear roof lines. Some could see flames near the vent, and through an upper apartment window.
One apartment in the building had been vacant and listed for rent recently.
The other two were occupied. No injuries were reported.
