POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie Common Council interviewed nine applicants for the position of Councilperson-at-Large, who will serve as the body’s chairperson, filling the vacancy created when Sarah Salem resigned following her DWI conviction. The term of the position expires on December 31, 2023.
Apparently, the new leader will not be chosen from among those candidates.
The council has violated the city charter by not naming a replacement by October 20, 2022.
Sixth Ward Councilwoman Natasha Cherry, vice-chair of the council became the Acting Council Chairperson in September and previously said she was only able to fill the role through the end of 2022.
Although no resolution is on the agenda for Monday night’s meeting, sources on the common council have told Mid-Hudson News that a resolution will be “walked on” to name Cherry to the Chairperson position through the end of 2023.
Councilwoman Cherry has not responded to repeated requests seeking comment.
