Monticello methadone clinic opens

(MONTICELLO – Saying heroin is a “real issue in the community,” State Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) said Friday that the new methadone treatment center opened in Monticello is needed now more than ever.

Gunther, a registered nurse who worked in a detox unit, said Lexington Center for Recovery, uses a holistic approach.

“First of all, someone comes in on a daily basis and they dosage, and so they are not getting any quantity. Secondly, they do see a therapist, which I think is very important, and I think that it gives somebody routine, and I think once you get to a certain point, the deal is they want to ween them of it,” she said.

Lexington Medical Director Dr. Rashiah Elam said methadone treatment “is the closest thing that I can say to a miracle in addiction treatment.”

Sullivan County Health and Human Services Commissioner John Liddle said in addition to saving living lives, the clinic will save the county $1.5 million a year in Medicaid transportation costs.
