NEW YORK – Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is losing her edge over her Republican challenger, Congressman Lee Zeldin, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll of likely voters in New York.  The poll results were released on October 18.  Election Day is Tuesday, November 8, 2022, 22 days from the release of the poll data.

Overall, according to the poll, Hochul is leading Zeldin 50-46 percent in the race for governor.

In New York City, the poll has Hochul leading Zeldin, a congressman from Long Island, 59-37 percent.  Historically, the city has largely voted for Democratic candidates.

In the suburbs, the poll shows Zeldin inching past Hochul with a lead of 50-49 percent.

Zeldin’s lead is much more substantial in the poll of voters upstate with the congressman outpolling the governor 52-44 percent.

“In the blue state of New York, the race for governor is competitive. Democrats have cruised to victory in gubernatorial races since 2006, but Governor Hochul’s narrow edge puts Republican Lee Zeldin well within striking distance of her,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Mary Snow.

Congressman Zeldin has been a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump.  The embattled former leader of the free world recently endorsed Zeldin’s candidacy, which may impact Zeldin’s chances.  The poll shows 33 percent of likely voters have a favorable opinion of Donald Trump, while 60 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him.

A total of 1,617 New York State likely voters were surveyed from October 12th – 16th with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.
