MAHOPAC – A 49-year-old Mahopac man has been arrested by Carmel Town Police on a rape charge in connection with the sexual assault of a woman adjacent to the Putnam Trailway near Weber Hill Road in Mahopac.
The alleged incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on September 10.
The suspect, Neftali Caal-Cocoj, was taken into custody as he attempted to flee the area on a bicycle.
Police credit the fast actions of witnesses to the incident that aided in the quick apprehension of the suspect.
He was arraigned and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Carmel Police were assisted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s Office.
