KINGSTON – As more and more people are facing eviction from their rented homes, legal services agencies are overwhelmed and with that in mind, the Ulster County Legislature may fund agencies to represent people facing that challenge.

Eve Walter, chairwoman of the Health, Human Services and Housing Committee, has issued a request for proposals to determine if there are agencies that could provide help.

“While there are organizations out there who can provide this kind of support, they are overwhelmed right now. So, we wanted to lend county support for a one-year project to get as many people who are at risk of facing eviction who are facing legal battles and challenges that they have free access to high quality, legal support,” she said.

Walter said lawmakers have not attached any dollar amount to the proposal. They want to see what agencies propose.
