MONTICELLO – Sullivan County legislators voted to bond up to $20 million toward construction of a new SUNY Sullivan athletic complex.

That funding would be matched by a similar financial commitment from the state.

The vote was not unanimous. Legislator Ira Steingart voted against the allocation.

“I am very much for the projects at the college and a strong supporter, but first of all, it started at $5 million, then we went to $15 million. How did it get to $20 million and with the information we got so far, how can we go ahead,” he questioned. “No one did a cost-benefit analysis. We don’t have any estimates of what the building is going to be. We have no idea the amount the college is going to use it.”

As proposed, the facility would include a collegiate-sized swimming pool and an indoor track.
