SHAWANGUNK – A semi-truck hauling a trailer with apple bins ran off the road and overturned into a body of water in the area of 351 Plains Road in the Town of Shawangunk, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 14.

The driver, a 68-year-old Clintondale man, got out safely.

Deputies said the driver failed to stay on the roadway and lost control of the truck and trailer.

The truck struck a Central Hudson utility pole and guard rail along the roadway before tipping over into the water.

A State Department of Environmental Conservation spill response team and firefighters from the City of Kingston Fire Department Hazmat Unit responded due to large amounts of fuel on the road and the water.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Wallkill, Walden and Kingston fire departments, State Police, Central Hudson, Ulster County Department of Public Works, the State DEC and American Petroleum.
