KINGSTON – Ulster County lawmakers have voted to bond over $2.6 million for improvements at the county veterans’ cemetery in New Paltz.

The vote was not unanimous, though, as two legislators including Eve Walter, objected to the cost.

“My concern is the price tag went from $270,000 just in 2018. A year ago, it was $1.4 million and now it’s $2.8 million,” she said. “All I was asking and expecting that we would be a little more thoughtful. There was only one bidder and there are ways that this amount could be reduced without losing any of the beauty and benefit of this project.”

The other no vote, for the same reason, came from Chris Hewitt.

Prior to the voting, several county veterans spoke in favor of the expense.
