LIVINGTON MANOR – Fire departments, emergency medical services personnel, and Sullivan County officials including sheriff’s deputies and District Attorney Meagan Galligan spent much of the day on Tuesday talking to high schoolers about the dangers of drinking or doing drugs while driving.

“Operation Prom Night” was held at Livingston Manor High School.

Following indoor discussion, the students moved outside where simulated accidents, field sobriety tests and arrests were demonstrated.

Several agencies responded to the simulation, extracting teen actors from the wreckage of two crashed vehicles, using Jaws of Life and other emergency equipment.

Throughout the demonstration, students were asked to consider the toll that drunk driving crashes have on innocent victims and those who drink and drive.

“The numbers are clear: Every day, 300,000 people drive drunk in our country, killing one person every 50 minutes as a result,” said Galligan. “One person’s decision to stay put or call a sober ride could be the difference between life and death for the driver, a passenger or an innocent parent, friend or child.”

Participating in Operation Prom Night were the Livingston Manor and Roscoe-Rockland fire departments, Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mobile Medic Ambulance, Sullivan County Emergency Operations Center, Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies, and Galligan.
