Newburgh man pleads guilty to killing young woman

GOSHEN – A Newburgh man who went gunning for his ex-girlfriend but shot and kill an innocent young woman – Chelsea Debidin – who was visiting in the family’s New Windsor apartment in December 2019, pled guilty in Orange County Court on Monday to murder and all other counts of the indictment against him.

Carlos Rivera, 49, entered the plea during the jury selection phase of the trial against him and his co-defendant.

The district attorney’s office will continue the prosecution of Cornelius Stubbs, 48, the co-defendant at trial.

The two men had been indicted for murder, two counts of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The men were charged with breaking into the Knox Village apartment of the ex-girlfriend’s sister with guns a blazing, shooting the brother of the two sisters in the arm and fatally shooting the brother’s girlfriend, 21-year-old Chelsea Debidin of Walden.

The woman who had been targeted, was the mother of one of Stubbs’ children.
