ALBANY – Effective June 1 and through the end of the year, the state’s 16-cent per gallon fuel tax will be lifted. The provision was included in the state’s newly adopted budget.

Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) was first to sponsor legislation to remove the state tax to help drivers as prices at the pump rise dramatically because of global market volatility.

“At a time when many families are still feeling economic instability relating to the pandemic, lawmakers ought to do everything they can to lighten the financial burden for families and folks on fixed incomes,” he said. “I encourage county and municipal leaders across the state to consider suspending the taxes they levy on fuel as well, which would have a substantial impact on limited family budgets.”
