UPDATE: Child struck and killed by garbage truck; grandmother seriously injured

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Emergency personnel are investigating a Monday afternoon accident in the Town of Poughkeepsie that involved two pedestrians who had been struck by a garbage truck.  The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the vicinity of Mary Avenue and Stanley Street on the east side of town.

Sources at the scene told Mid-Hudson News that a 71-year-old woman and her 3-year-old grandchild* were struck by a garbage truck operated by Royal Carting in Hopewell Junction.  The child is said to have died at the scene.  The grandmother was transported by ambulance to Townsend Park where a helicopter landed to pick her up and transport her to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

UPDATE:  The child was originally reported as a 10-year-old at the scene, by Mid-Hudson News.  The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department issued a statement indicating that the child is actually 3-years-old.  According to police officials, the accident was being reconstructed as of Monday afternoon.

Representatives of the sanitation company arrived at the scene and were witnessed talking to the police officers.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Arlington Fire Department, and Mobile Life ambulance personnel.
