Man charged with attempted murder after beating teenage girl

POUGHKEEPSIE – A teenage woman is in the hospital after being severely beaten on Sunday in the City of Poughkeepsie.  A 25-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail after he was arraigned overnight in the city.

On Sunday, April 10 at approximately 11 a.m., City of Poughkeepsie Police received a report of a female down on the floor at a residence on Roosevelt Avenue, which may have been the result of a domestic incident. . Police and EMS arrived on the scene and located an unconscious and unresponsive female teen suffering from severe head trauma.

The teenager was transported to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.

City police investigated the incident and identified city resident Sebastian Morataya-Mendez as the suspected assailant.  The man had fled the scene by car and officers requested the assistance of state troopers to locate the man.

State police located and detained Morataya-Mendez around 3 p.m. on Sunday in the town of Monroe in Orange County without incident.  Poughkeepsie police traveled to Monroe and took custody of the man.  His vehicle was impounded and towed back to Poughkeepsie.

Sources have told Mid-Hudson News that the victim and suspect were well-known to each other.

Morataya-Mendez was charged with attempted murder, arraigned in the City of Poughkeepsie Court just before 1 a.m. on Monday, and remanded to Dutchess County Jail.
