ALBANY – State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa has appointed Mary Fox-Alter as state monitor for the East Ramapo Central School District.

Fox-Alter will serve as the state’s academic monitor and will work with Bruce Singer, who has been the state’s fiscal monitor for the district since March 2020.

The state monitors in East Ramapo oversee district finances and operations and help to ensure that students have equitable access to high-quality instruction, programs, and services.

Fox-Alter most recently served as the superintendent of schools for the Pleasantville Union Free School District. She is expected to start in her new role on April 7. With more than 40 years of experience as an educator, Fox-Alter joined the faculty of the Pleasantville Union Free School District in 1990 after working as a social studies and computer science teacher in Catholic schools for nine years.

East Ramapo students, parents, teachers, community members, and other interested stakeholders can sign up for the Department’s email distribution list to receive updates on district-related information.  Community members can contact the monitors directly by emailing EastRamapoMonitors@nysed.gov.
