MIDDLETOWN – The Middletown Police Department must diversify and Mayor Joseph DeStefano has issued a call for more minority members to take the upcoming civil service exam.

The mayor said the department is woefully under-represented in terms of the city’s population.

“The City of Middletown Police Department has 71 budgeted positions. We have a population that is probably in the area of 60 to 70 percent minority. We have one African American police officer,” he said. “Our diversity outreach is underway and continues but we need you to take the test. If you want your police department to reflect your community, we need people to take the test.”

The next test will be administered on April 9 with the application filing deadline at noon on March 7. The mayor said interested individuals should contact the city’s civil service office for details.
