TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A man was hospitalized as a result of a Saturday evening fire in the Spackenkill area of Poughkeepsie.  An Arlington Fire Department engine crew was on scene moments after the call just after 6:30 p.m.

Dutchess County 911 received a report of a house fire at 36 Hagan Drive at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and dispatched the Arlington Fire Department to the scene.  An engine crew that had just finished another call diverted to the fire instead of returning to their station first.

The first arriving firefighters confirmed an active fire in a second-floor bedroom.  They were greeted at the door by the resident who complained of chest pains, according to Arlington Fire District Chief Bill Steenbergh.  The man was removed from the house and treated until an ambulance arrived to transport him to a local hospital.

Firefighters worked quickly to successfully contain the blaze to the bedroom.

“The firefighters worked quickly and contained the fire to one room.  This quick stop is proof that the continuous training our firefighters participate in, is essential,” said Chief Steenburgh.

The department’s investigation unit arrived on scene shortly after the fire was extinguished to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The initial survey of the aftermath indicated that the fire originated in the bedroom and was possibly caused by an errant cigarette that was not discarded properly.

No first responders were injured during the call.  The condition of the resident was not released.
